Topics and prompts

Learn how prompts work in Klarvu and organize them with topics, personas, stages, and tags. Understand branded vs. unbranded prompts.

Updated

Prompts are the questions Klarvu asks AI platforms on behalf of your potential customers. They're the foundation of the metrics you see throughout Klarvu.

That's why choosing the right questions matters. The closer your prompts are to what your customers actually ask, the more useful your results will be.

What is a prompt?

A prompt is a question Klarvu automatically sends to AI engines on a regular schedule.

For example: "What's the best accounting software for freelancers?"

Each time the question runs, Klarvu saves and analyzes the answer. This lets you track whether your business appears, which competitors are mentioned, and how the answers change over time.

How your prompts are organized

Once you're tracking a larger number of questions, keeping everything organized becomes important.

Klarvu gives you four ways to group and filter your prompts.

DimensionWhat it meansExample
TopicsThe subject areas your prompts cover. Each prompt belongs to one topic."Accounting", "Payroll software"
PersonasThe type of customer or decision-maker the question is relevant to."CFO", "Freelancer"
StagesWhere the question fits in the buying journey. The default stages are "Informational" (researching), "Commercial" (comparing options), and "Transactional" (ready to buy or sign up)."Commercial"
TagsCustom labels you create to group and filter questions."Q4-campaign"

You can manage topics, personas, stages, and tags under "Configure → Prompt Organization" and use them to filter questions under "Prompts".

Branded and unbranded prompts

There's an important difference between questions that mention your company and questions that don't.

A branded prompt includes your brand name. For example: "Is [brand] good accounting software for small businesses?"

An unbranded prompt doesn't mention your company. For example: "What's the best accounting software for small businesses?"

Branded prompts help you understand what AI says when someone asks about your company directly.

Unbranded prompts show whether AI recommends your business when someone is looking for a solution without mentioning you by name.

Countries and AI engines per prompt

By default, each prompt runs across all AI engines included in your plan, within your selected market.

You can also track the same question in multiple countries. This is useful if your business operates across different markets.

Keep in mind that each prompt-country combination counts as one prompt toward your limit.

For example, tracking the same question in Denmark and Sweden counts as two prompts. During your free trial, you can track up to 50.

Where do your prompts come from?

There are three ways to add prompts to Klarvu:

  • Setup suggestions: When you first create your brand, Klarvu generates prompts based on your company profile, topics, markets, and personas.
  • "Suggest more": Get additional suggestions matched to your topics and personas, including both branded and unbranded questions.
  • "Add prompt": Write your own questions. This is particularly useful when you already know what customers regularly ask about your products or services.

You don't need to come up with every question yourself. But it's worth reviewing the suggestions to make sure they reflect your business.

The next pages explain how to write useful prompts and manage them in practice.

What happens when you edit or remove a prompt?

You can make changes after tracking has started. But editing, archiving, and permanently deleting a prompt work differently.

  • Edit: Use "Edit prompt" to change a prompt's settings, such as its topic, persona, stage, countries, AI platforms, and tags. The wording itself can't be changed once tracking has started. To ask the question differently, create a new prompt and remove the old one with "Remove". That way, the old prompt's answers and history are preserved.
  • "Remove": Archives the prompt and stops it from running on the next scheduled run. All collected answers and analysis are preserved, and you can restore the prompt from "Archived".
  • "Delete permanently": Permanently deletes the prompt and all its answers, sources, and analysis. Historical metrics based on those answers will also change. Only owners and administrators can perform this action, and it cannot be undone.
